On the Road - A Providence Interlude and Fascinating Night

After a fun Thursday night at Dogwatch Artisan Market, I had my Friday free before heading off to the Greenway Open Market on Saturday. I decided to take full advantage of the day and explore some of the fabulous people and places of Providence. Back in July, I met Anh Sawyer at the Greenway Open Market in Boston. She had found me through this blog and wanted to check out the Greenway in person to see if it would be a good prospect for her and her husband's line of clothes called Philip Sawyer Designs. Anh opened her doors to me so I took a visit to their home/studio in the morning.
Ahn Vu Sawyer and Philip Sawyer
Both home and studio are nestled in The Plant building in the Olneyville neighborhood of Providence. This unique converted mill houses live/work spaces, restaurants, non-profits, artist studios, and commercial spaces. Ahn and Philip have the best of both worlds: a gorgeous living space filled with creative decor and a generously sized work space for designing and producing clothes.

Both Ahn and Philip have traversed interesting and diverse paths to get to where they are today. Ahn is the author of the book Song of Saigon: One Woman's Journey to Freedom, which chronicles her harrowing escape to freedom during the war in South Vietnam in 1975. She has worn many hats since then: student, teacher, author, speaker, designer, and artist just to name a few.

Philip had his beginnings in International Affairs, education, and humanitarian aid projects. Eventually childhood influences (mother and grandmother were seamstresses and quilt makers) and passion for design lead him in a new direction to where he is today. Add to the mix three beautiful children and several major moves across the country and you end up with a design company steeped in family love, mixes of cultures, and unique perspectives.

Philip and Anh view clothing as art and when you get to see their pieces in person, that vision is very clear. The fine fabrics, beautiful details, and elegant lines make the wearer feel quite special. I had the pleasure of trying  on a gorgeous wool twill coat and loved the draping, shape of the pockets, flattering fit, and versatility of the coat. You can visit Philip and Anh at their studio in Providence or visit their storefront in Newport, RI to see their pieces in person. It's well worth the trip!

As I walked out of Anh and Philip's studio out into the parking lot, I bumped into a familiar face - Devienna Anggraini of DA Metals. What a small world! I met Devienna at my first Twist show in Northampton, MA. She creates brightly-colored enameled jewelry with unique geometric shapes. Devienna was just getting settled into her new space and was gracious enough to let me take a quick look. I was quite impressed by her spacious and bright showroom and workspace. Soon she will have an official studio opening but until then, check out her website and Etsy shop to see her vivid pieces and learn more about DA Metals.

Soon after leaving the Plant, I zipped just ten minutes away to one of my favorite crafty queens - Wendy Baker of Bendywho. It was love at first sight when I saw her bold floral and layered pieces back in May and I now that I know Wendy, I adore her as much as her jewelry! I got to swing by her house/studio and felt right at home among her space filled with vintage findings, baubles, beads, and containers full of what-nots. We instantly started digging through supplies and trading. I brought her a box of chandelier parts and vintage jewelry and she gave me a tons of letter tiles, glass leaves, beads, and curtain tie backs.
I love Wendy to pieces!
We traded a few choice words...
We took a mini road trip to one of our favorite vintage jewelry supply warehouses in Providence and did some damage together. Before we parted ways, I got to try on a gorgeous custom necklace in bronze and black, which is soon flying off to a famous chef in Asia. I also picked up a Bendywho ring and earrings for two friends. I guarantee you will love Bendywho designs as much as I do if you check out her Etsy shop or visit her on FB!

My next and final stop for the evening was friend Stacey's place in Hull. I always get five star accommodations when I stay with her. She welcomed me with a bright yellow Lego head container and a hug... who could ask for more? I bestowed upon her a Bendywho ring, freshly picked just hours before. I have to say, she wore it quite well.

After settling in, we walked to the main thoroughfare of Hull and stopped for a light drink and dinner by the water. Next we headed off to participate in our favorite Hull tradition - Fascination! This old fashioned amusement game is a cross between a sitting version of Skee Ball and BINGO. Add to it a killer patchwork linoleum floor, the carnival barker style commentary of the "Fascination Master" in a raised booth, and prizes and you have one exciting evening out! Guess who was the big winner of the night? STACEY! Never has a seven buck jackpot felt more like a million dollars. After a full day of friends, art, and games, I went to bed one happy camper, recharged, and ready for the Greenway on Saturday.

On the Road - The Greenway Open Market and SoWa Open Market

A steamy spray from the Rings Fountain greeted me last Saturday at the Greenway Open Market in Boston. This was my second time selling at the Greenway this season and I was very excited to be book-ended between two of my favorite craftanistas - Wendy Baker of Bendywho and Grace Napoleon of Folk Couture. Being next to my fabulous friends made for a day of great conversation and laughs along the promenade. I brought with me dozens of new pieces to share at the market, including lockets, statement pieces, and circus-inspired necklaces.

While perusing all the handmade goods along the Greenway, I stopped in my tracks when I saw a fantastic print chock full of brightly colored cats. My inner crazy cat lady couldn't help but stare at the cluster of felines with glowing eyes. Upon further scrutiny, I discovered dogs, rabbits, and even monsters chomping on power lines. The artist behind this bright bevy of beasts was Marc Roulstone of marcartshop. Marc offered prints, cards, magnets, buttons, and even whimsical wooden robots at the market. His use of bright color and twists of humor make his work the perfect gift for those who are young at heart. Visit marcartshop online to see his full line of products including tote bags and fantastic graphic t-shirts.

In the afternoon, Grace and I enjoyed delicious grilled chicken and pulled pork sandwiches from The Dining Car food truck just steps away from our tents. While waiting for our food, I had a chance to chat with the owner, David Harnik. With years of experience as Director of Catering and Baking for L’Espalier and Sel de la Terre, it was no wonder that the food was out of this world. The generous sandwiches were piled high with fresh ingredients and kept us energized for the rest of the day. Check out The Dining Car online to see their menu and to find out where you can catch them next.

My favorite customers at the Greenway had to be two friends who enjoyed digging through my suitcase filled with REcap bracelets, made out of used Crayola marker caps. They looked adorable with bursts of color around their wrists. A nice variety of pieces went home with happy customers, including a pair of Dale Evans and Roy Rogers necklaces. The BEST part of the day was trading necklaces with Wendy of Bendywho. I got to take home a gorgeous fuchsia and orange floral necklace with bold blooms and Wendy got a petite rouge compact locket with brassy chick and ring of rhinestones hidden inside. It was definitely a win-win trade and I've already gotten tons of compliments on my new necklace full of baubles and blooms.

The next day, Grace and I set up for day two of our Boston extravaganza at the SoWa Open Market. This time, we did it boutique-style and set up a Twitch and Whiskers and Folk Couture shop under one tent. I always love showing with Grace because her clothes made out of clothes and my jewelry made out of stuff make for a perfect pairing.

Early in the day, Grace came running into our booth holding a giant geared heart. She enthusiastically turned the parts in a Rubik's Cube fashion and I watched in awe as the heart morphed into different shapes. Soon after I met the geniuses behind the gadget. Cyndi and Chris of carrythewhat? are gurus of 3D printing. At their table I got to toy with a fun variety of geared hearts in different sizes, puzzles, models, toys, and all sorts of incredible geekery. I learned a little bit about the technology they use and the magic behind the Open Source community. Definitely check carrythewhat? out in person to get your hands on one of their hearts or visit them online and on Etsy to see what they're up to.

Grace and I enjoyed our day chatting with both locals and tourists at the Greenway. Grace introduced a new line of Folk Couture shirts at the show and they were a big hit! I sent into the world some of my favorite upcycled pieces, including a faucet handle necklace and mermaid magnet necklace.

I really enjoyed my weekend in Boston! Since I am on school vacation, I will be taking advantage of my time off and will be going on a few adventures in the months to come. I hope to return from my trips with new stories and inspirations.

I have just two more show this summer season (fall and winter dates to follow soon).

Come see me at the new Dogwatch Artisan Market on Thursday, August 2nd from 4-8 pm (during the Concert Under the Stars series in Fairhaven, MA).
And I will be returning to The Greenway Open Market on August 4th.

On the Road - The Opening of the Greenway Market

Memorial Day weekend was meant for adventure. On Friday night, Grace Napoleon of Folk Couture and I hit the road in her new-used Volvo. Miraculously our two craft show set ups fit into her new vehicle better than her older, bigger car. You gotta love Volvos! We took off for Boston the night before the opening of the Greenway Open Market and had a smooth ride in. On Saturday, we were happy to be back at one of our favorite weekly Boston shows. It was a hot day but it didn't stop both locals and tourists from coming out in full force. The spray of the Rings Fountain and the shade of our tents kept visitors happy as they walked the green promenade.

Often the best ideas come from utilizing materials in unconventional ways and Hoist Away Bags is the perfect example of this. The very clever Laura Cleminson gives a "second wind" to old and abandoned sails by turning them into one-of-a-kind, tote bags, handbags, and wristlets. These incredibly sturdy and unique bags use the original sail  grommets, lettering/numbering, and trim to add to the nautical flair of each piece. The bags feature draw string tops, bottle openers, pockets, and key chains to add further function to the beautiful form. My favorite part of each bag has to be the tag on the inside that gives a snippet of the sail's history. Laura's business is steeped in kindness and generosity. All the sails she uses are donated by others and she in turn contributes to the non-profit "Rocking the Boat." Visit Hoist Away Bags online and sail away with the perfect gift.

Lately, when I've been complimenting fellow vendors on their lovely floral earrings and brooches, they've all responded the same thing: "Wendy Baker made these. You will love her jewelry and her!" Well, when you're right, you're right. When I came upon her Bendywho booth, I was in color wonderland. Wendy hand paints vintage metal flower components to make the most whimsical and joyful pieces you will ever see. Her layered petals, brightly hued beads, and mish mosh of baubles spoke to me on so many levels. After chatting with Wendy for a few minutes, I also loved the artist behind the pieces. Within a few short moments we were cracking up and chatting like old friends. I cannot wait to see her again at the Festival Fete Garden City show. You better go check her out too before I hoard all her pieces to myself.

I treated myself to a ring. How could I resist?
Midway through the steamy day, I took a quick gander to find some eats. Through the heat, I thought I saw a mirage. Was that really a food truck called "Mei Mei" (a childhood family nickname of mine) and did they really offer Chinese-American cuisine? Was this food truck plopped down at the Greenway just for me? I think it was because when I saw the menu, I found the perfect fusion of foods from both of my cultures. It was a hard choice but I finally ordered the savory bread pudding with scallions and cheddar. I could have sat down with a whole tray of the bread pudding - it was THAT good! Visit Mei Mei Street Kitchen's website to take a look at their other delish offerings and to learn more about the cool family behind the name.

Now that outdoor show season is in full swing, I get to see so many of my favorite friends/artists. Carrie Wager of SepiaLepus was at the Greenway with her adorably illustrated, creature-featured art, prints, cards, pins, magnets, and new local maps. I have always admired her stuffed bunnies that dangle from tent and when I mentioned that my students would appreciate it, she donated one to the class. I cannot wait to share my new balloony bunny with my 2nd graders. Grace and I always enjoy each others' company on the road and we had fun chatting the day away. I loved her new red, black, and white Folk Couture dress with pugs and tear drop patterned skirt. Lots of lovely frocks went home to happy ladies, including a dress with a mama and baby polar bear. It made one mama very happy!

The big hit of the Greenway for me had to be the REcap bracelets, upcycled out of Crayola marker caps. A bunch went home to the young and young at heart. A nice variety of compact necklaces, a French bicycle head badge necklace, and some Thimblism necklaces also left with vistors from all over. I will be making more metal thimble necklaces this week with nautical charms (whale tails, steering wheels, and anchors)for my upcoming shows. I love this busy time of year!

After a sunny day on the Greenway, Grace and I squeezed everything back into her car, cleaned up, and headed off to dinner with Jen of Zooguu plush handmade toys. There's nothing better than unwinding with friends, dinner, and ice cream after a full day. The following Sunday, Grace and I went off on a thriftavaganza before heading back to Danbury. It was her special treat to me for my birthday. It started with a scrumptious breakfast at Sofra Bakery and Cafe and continued on to a string of local thrift shops. My big find of the day was a vintage polka dotted Victor Costa dress with ruffles for miles. Grace also surprised me with a popcorn box full of birthday treats, including a ceramic "stinky stuff" jar with skunk. Oh the things I can put in there!

It was a fun-filled weekend in Boston. In just a few days (6/3), you can catch me at stART on the Street in Worcester, MA.
The following Saturday and Sunday (6/9 & 6/10) I will be at Festival Fete's Garden City Art Festival in Cranston, RI.
