Twitch and Whiskers' February giveaway was for a Design Your Own Thimblism Necklace. The lucky winner was Shanna of Vintage Redoux on Etsy.

When Shanna won, I sent her several pics of my supplies and she quickly designed the necklace of her dreams.

First, she chose a brassy thimble.

Next, she chose a charm, bead cap, chain, and clear bead for the top.

The final necklace was package up on a vintage BINGO card.

The back of the card had a fun collage to compliment her music-themed piece.

Shanna was so happy with the fun packaging and the necklace that she shared her joy on Etsy's Trashion Team Blog.

A New Moon - An Upcycled Necklace for Roni

Roni was the winner of my New Year Scavenger Hunt Contest. For her prize, she wanted me to upcycle a favorite keepsake into a bolder piece. Roni presented me with a petite scrimshaw moon pendant. She rarely wore it because it was too small for her taste. She wanted to add interest to the pendant and display it on a bigger chain.

I shared a variety of interesting metal components with Roni. After she poked through the filigree stampings, keys, escutcheons, and other hardware, she found a round, silver-tone stamping that she was very happy with. Her moon nested perfectly in the center of the piece. Next, she chose a chain with large loops to compliment the roundness of the pendant.

The old bail was removed from the moon and a new bail was fastened to the silver-tone stamping. After a lobster clasp was attached to the chain and the pendant was connected, Roni's new necklace was complete! Just a few small changes turned Roni's old keepsake into an updated piece. Now her keepsake will see the light of day, instead of being worn only once in a blue moon.

This customizing service is a fun twist on my popular Thimblism line, and my newest offering for the New Year. Customers ordering this service (as well as the winner of this contest), will be able to create a truly unique charm necklace. Simply select your favorite thimble, charm, bead cap, bead and chain from my large collection of fun supplies. I will build the necklace of your dreams, package it up in vintage ephemera, and mail it off to you lickety split.

2) "Heart" (aka - add as a favorite) any item in the Twitch and Whisker's Etsy Shop. To do this, select your favorite item from my inventory. Upcycling with the Brownies

Sashes, smiles, and bags of junk. That's how my first creative project of 2012 began. After school last week, I got to run an upcycled jewelry workshop for a fourth grade Brownie troop. It was a real treat to work with this spirited group of 24 gals. Each girl brought with them reusasble materials from home and also got to work with some of my supplies.

The workshop was a flurry of drilling, gluing, and wiring. Thanks to the creativity of the girls, and hands-on help from the leaders, a lot was accomplished in just one hour.

Beauty in Full Circle or An Elephant Never Forgets

Yesterday Thom and I went to New York City. With the holiday craft show season behind me and vacation upon me, I thought it would be a good opportunity to go and explore some museums. I needed some new inspiration for the New Year.

First stop was the New Museum (speaking of new). Highlights of our visit included jet propelling down Carsten Holler's Experience slide, watching Thom conduct psychological experiments on himself, and taking a technicolor primate nap.

Next, we headed to one of my favorite places - The Museum of Arts and Design. When we came upon its location at Columbus Circle, I nearly stopped in my tracks. Smack dab in the center of the circle were some old friends: two giant elephant statues. Let me explain. Back in mid-October, I had a strange day. It started with finding five shopping carts neatly parked in front of my house on my way to work.

At the end of that same day, I met up with some friends at Molten Java in Bethel. We parted ways on that rainy and dark night and I headed back toward Danbury. A few blocks from the coffee shop, a huge flatbed truck slowly pulled in front of me from a side street, carrying two life-sized elephant sculptures. I drove home behind these colossal creatures in awe. From start to finish that day was both sculptural and surreal.

Well lo and behold, these two behemoth buddies greeted me once again in a swirl of traffic right outside the Museum of Arts and Design. It was such a surprise because I never thought I'd ever see them again! It was fun getting up close and personal with the sculptures. On the placard, I found out the elephants were created by sculptor Peter Woytuk and that there were eighteen other whimsical sculptures of his scattered about the city. Things really came full circle at Columbus Circle.

The rest of our night out in the city was a whirl of activity. We explored jewelry and mid century design at the MAD, karaoke sang our hearts out until we nearly lost our voices, visited the mecca of all synthesizer shops (it was a religious experience for Thom), and ended the night sharing the perfect little pizza in Little Italy.

Throughout the evening, I kept having "whoa" moments whenever I thought about my reunion with the elephants. It was the perfect reminder that life is quite spectacular when you stop and take notice of the beauty around you. Sometimes it comes in unexpected forms: shopping carts, glances down staircases, bright blue orangutans. Thanks to two elephants, I will never forget this!

On the Road: Hot Cup o' Handmade 2

My last hoorah for the 2011 holiday craft show season was the Hot Cup o' Handmade 2 show at Molten Java in Bethel, CT. And what better way to end the year than being surrounded by my talented friends in one of my favorite places? We set up early for an afternoon show. The gals all charged up with toasty drinks and snacks from the counter. We were visited by many of our local friends, including Julie - who was knitting colorful goatees for an upcoming Pantera tribute party. My pal Alex also stopped by to say hello wearing one of my pieces. She looked fabulous!

Jen Matlack of Milly Gilly Home and Garden (aka Daisychestnut on Etsy) brought a lovely array of whimsical terrariums, vintage utensil garlands and garden markers, and creatively embellished ceramic goods. I adored her hand dyed cotton ribbon that was wound with care around wooden sticks. Her vintage ceramic plates are specially marked with poems and quotes, but my favorite had to be the "Crap" plate. Jen also had a new terrarium with a grazing deer that was oh-so-sweet. I love how she used the candle holder on the deer's back to hold a tiny spot of moss. My favorite Little Cowgirl, Lys Guillorn was adorned with a new fringed outfit that shimmied and shook the day away. Lys displayed new snazzy Christmas stockings, fabulous purses, and jewelry with candy-colored vintage buttons. I couldn't resist getting one of her adorable collaged Christmas cards with sewn details and a little clear pocket o' sequins. I like it so much, it just may be a Christmas card to myself. Don't fret...you can get one for yourself in her Etsy shop (in addition to many other unique gifts). Word on the street is that her shop will have many new things in it soon!

Folk Couture's display is ever-changing and inspiring thanks to Grace Napoleon's busy hands and clever point of view. I got to thumb through racks and racks of dramatic dresses and swanky sweaters. I was so impressed when her friend Laura showed up in a Folk Couture original with a dramatic floral neckline. She looked like an absolute knockout! You can find Grace and her fabulous frocks this weekend at IDM Boston, SoWa Holiday Market, and Craftopia. Pepper your conversation with the phrase "grace and glory" when you see her and get a special discount. Pass it on!

It was a pleasure having Jean Maimone of Vintage Gems join us for Hot Cup o' Handmade 2. I had first met Jean at Dawn's Vintage Jewelry when her striking redesigned vintage creations were being showcased. I have always appreciated Jean's use of color n' glitz in her statement pieces. From beaded tassels to brightly hued chokers she offered an amazing array of showstoppers. I fell in love with her orange and gray acorn necklace and was thrilled when Thom surprised me with it during the day. Throughout the day I got hellos from local friends, pals from school, and family. A fun array of jewelry scooted out the door, including thimblism necklaces, REcap bracelets, and one of a kind pieces. A 1920's powder compact locket called "Encharma" and a vintage bicycle headbadge necklace called "Knight Night" went home with happy customers. The day rounded out nicely with a fun visit from Gwen (who looks splashingly sensational in her whale tail thimblism necklace) and hubby Keith. My in-laws, sister-in-law Marnie, and niece Darla also popped by to show love. It was a superb Sunday all around!

Kimblism Thimblism at the Toy Room

I got a visit from my pal Kim Ramsey at Hot Cup o' Handmade 1 back in November. She brought with her a pretty silver thimble inscribed with "Kate" (her grandma's name) and asked if I could custom make a thimblism necklace for her. Of course I was more than happy to! I swung by her shop, The Toy Room after school one day. I love any opportunity to visit her shop because it's chock full of wonderment and the coolest toys around. I brought with me containers full of kitschy charms, bead caps, and beads. Kim chose a bright plastic apple charm to dangle below her thimble. It came off a vintage Carmen Miranda/ fruit salad type necklace.

After making the necklace, Thom and I returned to her shop last Saturday to drop off the piece and to do a little holiday shopping. Kim looked absolutely radiant in her new necklace! To honor Kim, I named it the "Kimblism Thimblism" necklace. I just couldn't resist! I love it when I get the chance to work with items that hold meaning and sentiment and I especially enjoy making things for friends.

There was so much to look at in the store. Last year, I purchased a bunch of realistic looking chocolate chip cookie purses from Kim and they were a big hit during the holidays. Imagine my excitement when I saw a whole new line of products from the same company, including big ol' pizza and cupcake pillows! The Toy Room was filled to the brim with all sorts of cute stocking stuffers like goofy rubber faced hand puppets (I remember having these when I was a kid), colorful marbles and glass critter figurines, and mysterious socks that expand to full size in water. I asked Kim what was one of the hottest items in her shop right now and she said it was the "Loopdedoo" friendship bracelet maker. This jewelry maker gives this crafty kit a big thumbs up!

And then of course, there is the toy that I want (hint, hint). I almost forgot to mention that one of my favorite parts of visiting Kim, is the fact that we both have an extremely immature sense of humor. Knowing this, she pointed out the GAME OF ALL GAMES a few weeks ago while I was visiting: Doggie Doo. Let's just say that it features a dog, goopy green dog treats, a leash that you squeeze, and gaseous noises. I hope the man in the big red suit is taking note.

Every time I visit Kim, my day is filled with toys and laughter. What else could you possibly want? The Toy Room has perfect gifts for kids of all ages. Monday Meet Up With Alex

My friend Alex stopped by Hot Cup o' Handmade back in early November. She had been poking around my blog and Etsy shop for a while and finally decided upon the one piece she wanted to get in person. Of course, it was the one piece I didn't bring with me to the show! We fixed that problem by meeting up after school/work last Monday. I was met by Alex and her adorable son Ehren - who is quite the talented photographer.

Alex tried on "Welcome Home Embrace" and it looked nearly perfect on her. We decided to add a few inches of vintage chain in the back for more length. After the small adjustment, she looked like a million bucks!

Alex was also kind enough to pass to me some vintage jewelry, buttons, and components. That's one of the best parts of upcycling - you never know where your treasures will come from! I cannot wait to delve into my new materials for inspiration. This was definitely one of the best Monday's I've had in a good long while.

On the Road - Wellesley Marketplace

In true "on the road" fashion, Grace Napoleon of Folk Couture and I miraculously fit two displays-worth of materials into the back of her car with not an inch to spare. We hit the highway on Friday night and headed to Cambridge to stay with her daughter Siena. It's great having a friendly face and nice place to go to when in the Boston area.

And there was even room for us!

Bright and early on Saturday we set up for the Wellesley Marketplace at the Wellesley Middle School. It was the 35th year of the annual event to benefit the Wellesley Hills Junior Women's Club and their community service projects. The event is always well-attended and offers a great variety of handmade and manufactured goods. Displays were spread out throughout the school's cafeteria, gyms, and hallways. There was a great buzz in the air when the doors opened at 9 am and enthusiastic shoppers came rushing through.

Set up next to me was Zandra Zuraw of Zeal: Handmade Home. Zandra's decoupaged trays, coasters, frames, and map ornaments were a big hit at the show. Her use of unique papers, bold colors, and eye-catching graphics made her pieces a standout. Birds, whales, and vintage labels were cleverly collaged onto her wares and made everyday items not-so-everyday. Zandra also does custom orders where she can create trays using maps with specific locations, for the world-traveler in your life. I especially loved her use of Japanese papers with bold floral prints. Karen Capralos Grant of Simply June is simply wonderful! We briefly met each other before the show began and quickly learned that we loved each others work. Karen hand-embroiders pendants with floral bursts and bees and makes vintage-inspired, asymmetrical necklaces to accompany them. She also creates framed embroidered art, and most impressively, she offers the unique service of turning your child's artwork into an embroidered pillow (you can see the tiger sample in the pic below). Before we left I traded her one of my rouge locket necklaces with a bee inside for one of her embroidered bee necklaces. I wore it out to dinner that night because it matched my black and yellow dress perfectly. Visit her website for a touch of handmade whimsy and bee impressed!

When Carrie Sullivan of Sheabella Tutus came to visit my table, my eyes were instantly drawn to her bold ribbon necklace with bold red and turquoise beads. Upon further investigation, I learned that the beads were actually made of gumballs! Carrie carefully strings the bubblicious beads onto grosgrain ribbon with a touch of tulle. She offers all sorts of fanciful, handmade tutus with adorable embellishments and light fairy wings. When I visited her website, I saw that she even offers mermaid tails in the summer. At Wellesley, I got to try out my newest favorite thrift store find - a small suitcase. It was the perfect sized display for my REcap bracelets. Some of my more colorful compact necklaces went home to happy ladies including: Owl Moon, Mirror Mirror, and Last Call. I was thrilled to find out that many of my Thimblism necklaces, REcap bracelets, and Fun 'n' Games rings were going to be holiday gifts for kids. My favorite moment was seeing a 4 year old walking away wearing a necklace with a toy airplane hidden inside a compact. I'm definitely inspired by kids and couldn't be happier when they wear my pieces!

Grace's Folk Couture racks emptied of many dresses, sweaters, and tunics. Lots of ladies were drawn to her carefully constructed and composed clothes with mixed patterns, textures, and surprise details. She had an incredible dress with a growling bear graphic on top and iridescent formal dress bottom. It really found the perfect gal. She still has a busy season ahead and you can catch her in the weeks to come at Festival Fete, SoWa Holiday Market and Hot Cup o' Handmade.

On the Road - Twist in Northampton, MA

This past week was one of my favorite handmade show - Twist in Northampton, MA. Just the mere mention of it conjurers up images of amazingly curated wares, talented designers, fun customers, and a party-like atmosphere. There is really nothing else like it around! Thom and I headed up on Friday and couldn't wait for the show to begin!

The first night brought hellos from friendly neighbors. I was set up near two of my friends from last year: Chrissy of Chrissy Ann Ceramics and Abby of Abby Berkson Ceramics. It's always great to catch up and spend two days next to such creative and talented gals.

Just diagonal to me was the very talented jewelry designer Crystal Popko of Popko Shop. I have always been in awe of her handcrafted necklaces and earrings with real butterfly wings. She wore a blue morpho pendant all day that looked breath-taking every time it caught the light. Crystal's designs combine a unique elegance with bursts of color and iridescent sheen. Her display stopped many people in their tracks at Twist. I betcha there are going to be a lot of happy gals this holiday season when they receive one of her pieces. I couldn't resist getting one of her Glitter Pop Party Rings in bright pink and I can't help but smile when I wear it. One of the best parts of doing craft shows is meeting fabulous artists and designers. When husband Thom was walking about, he discovered the most clever necklaces carefully collaged and embedded with individual letterpress type. From above they reminded me of an aerial view of skyscrapers in a crowded city. When I had a chance to pop over to the table, not only did I discover the amazing jewelry, but I also met the incredible artist behind them. Nicole Monforti of Headcase Press works out of an 100-year old former textile mill in New Bedford, MA and I can only imagine how cool her space is. It was fascinating to hear how she moved her monster of a letterpress machine up an old freight elevator into her studio. In addition to jewelry, she creates wickedly funny cards and journals. Back when I did my very first craft show, I remember seeing a colorful display that left a lasting impression - And that would be the honeycomb-like shelves from Jen Gubicza of Zooguu. This North Boston native makes whimsical plush toys to die for. Monkeys and foxes and penguins...oh my! Jen and her husband Brian make their huggable friends to order. You can choose from a wide variety of sizes, patterns, colors, and unique features so your squishy friend fits your every need. Zooguu has a loyal following of kids of all ages and adds several new critters to their collection each year. Most recently, a narwhal with twisty horn and beguiling black eyes joined the lot. This past October, when Jen did SoWa's Market of the Living Dead, she created a zombie narwhal costume to match. How could you not love that? Once you explore the world of Zooguu, there's not turning back!

It always puts a smile on my face when I see ladies donning my jewelry at shows. Lucy and Mel drove up to Twist from CT. I was so pleasantly surprised to see Lucy wearing my blinking doll eye necklace. She looked dazzling! I was also thrilled to see Julie of Bugsella. The last time I saw her was at Brooklyn Craft Central's Shop the Archway where she was displaying her joyful children's onesies, quilts, and accessories. This time she was shopping and I got the special treat of meeting her adorable daughter Ella. They both left with locket necklaces and couldn't have looked prettier.

One of the many great things about Twist is its location. Northampton brings in many supporters of the arts. My customers were all so enthusiastic and fun to chat with. Many of my favorite OOAK pieces went home with folks, including several rouge locket necklaces, a bicycle headbadge necklace, and my favorite protractor necklace called "No Peking."

Twist gave me the perfect opportunity to pick up special holiday gifts for my friends and family. I visited Chrissy Ann Ceramics and Abby Berkson Ceramics for some hand crafted ceramic treasures. Little Birch Farm provided me with a nice array of fragrant natural body care products that I know will be loved by all. Jar of Wonder had amazing handmade cloth play food and I went home with a dainty delight. Migration Goods was right across from me at Twist so I got to ogle at Eling Chang's colorful ornaments and hair accessories all day. It was hard to choose what to get from her table, but I think I made the perfect choice for my friends' kids. MB by Brigid knitted a special custom-made gift on the spot for me and it was finished in time before we left. How's that for dedication? I wish I could post pics, but that would ruin the surprise for a lucky few, wouldn't it?

OF COURSE I also treated myself at the show. How could I not? Last year I bought a pack of candy button stationary from Heather Jeanny and I bee lined straight to her booth for more. I love my bar of Marian's Mint soap at home from Little Birch Farm so, I decided to grab an orange/cinnamon ball of soap before heading home. This past summer I was set up next to Heather Wells of Bright Lights Little City at the Smith Street Sunday Funday Event in NYC. I regretted not buying her headband with a vintage fruit cluster on it so imagine my excitement when I found she had made another. Guess what I wore the whole second day of the show! My list was topped off with a blossom clip from Migration Goods, a cool card from Headcase Press, a skateboard bangle from Coob Originals (got one last year as well), and my pink Glitter Pop Party Ring from Popko. Oh joy!

In a nutshell, Twist = bliss. I so enjoyed the show, the people, and Northampton. I can't wait for the next one!

There's nothing like being on your home turf when doing a show. Not only is traveling a breeze but you also get to see many familiar faces. This was definitely the case at Hot Cup o' Handmade last Tuesday. It was great to see many friendly visitors from around town, and my school. Plus, I was surrounded by some of the most talented local craftinistas in my favorite coffee shop - Molten Java in Bethel, CT.

Lys Guillorn of Little Cowgirl was saddled up next to me at the show. This creative gal really does it all, and her table was a great reflection of her many super powers. Besides being a very talented photographer, Lys sews bags with whimsical prints, creates a cornucopia of kitchy tiny pins with vintage ephemera, and fashions colorful jewelry out of buttons. I am now the proud owner of one of her button necklaces in red with a white heart detail. My husband Thom couldn't resist getting a few pins as well. The clothing designer extraordinaire (and my often time craft show travel companion), Grace Napoleon of Folk Couture, represented with racks and racks of new and amazing designs. Her hands have been on overdrive getting ready for the upcoming holiday season and it was great seeing all of her new sweaters and dresses in person.  Everyone at Molten Java was treated to a little fashion show every time someone tried on her unique "clothes out of clothes." The only thing that was missing was a red carpet! She's all over the place in the weeks to come, including Wellesley Marketplace in MA, Festival Fete in RI, and SoWa Holiday Market in MA. When you walk up to Jen Matlack's table you feel like you're strolling through an enchanted garden. Milly Gilly House and Garden (aka Daisy Chestnut on Etsy) offers mysterious terrariums with hidden treasures, hand-stamped vintage platters, and a whole variety of hand illustrated note cards/paper items. What Jen is best known for is her garden marker spoons and silverware garland. She embellishes vintage silverware with lovely hand drawn illustrations of herbs, vegetables, and plants.  Her items are so treasured that she got on Etsy's front page as a featured seller! Dontcha just love it when a local gal goes big? I fell in love with one of her terrariums in a mason jar, and just had to bring it home. You can really see and feel the amount of care and detail that go into each and every piece. At Hot Cup o' Handmade, I displayed a lot of new pieces and many went to great homes. My friend Karin swung by and treated herself to an early birthday gift. She looked fantastic in the vintage rouge locket necklace called "Feather in the Heather." Two of my favorite pieces also went to familiar faces:  "Eye-Lash-Ine" with a 1920's tin, monocle, and diorama & "Oh Deer, Oh Deer" which held a nature scene with two gold tone deer in a watch parts tin. Many thimblism necklaces went a-jinglin' out the door and several folks requested custom necklaces made with their own thimbles. I just love making pieces out of other people's treasures!

Wendy, the owner of Molten Java was there to partake in the crafty festivities. Most recently, she shared the exciting announcement that Molten Java will soon be relocating down the street into an amazing Victorian house. She's been hard at work painting, uncovering the beautiful wood floors, and getting the space ready for its opening. Read all about it here in the Bethel Buzz News. I'm so proud of Wendy, that I just want to stick a giant gold star in the middle of her forehead. 'Like' Molten Java on Facebook to get the most up-to-date info on the big move.

Something Old, Something New - A Tale of Two Necklaces (Part 4)

On October 8, 2011, Abby and Brian took the big leap and said, "I do" with Lighthouse Point as the beautiful backdrop. It's no surprise that this couple had unique finishing touches to match their quirky and fun personalities. A carousel, local food trucks, and breath-taking feather details in Abby's hair and on her dress were just a few of the details that made their day a stand out.

I was proud to be a small part of their wedding day. Abby wore my very first customized bridal piece. The necklace was upcycled from her mother's and grandmother's vintage jewelry. It was Abby's loving tribute to two special women and I felt honored to have played a part.

Upcycling at the Upper Room

Thom and I pulled up to the Church of the Epiphany right at 2:00 pm. Earlier this summer, we were on a thrift romp in Southbury, CT and due to our late start in the day we got there just when The Upper Room closed. It's one of our favorite places to visit while in the area. As the shop's welcome flag was being taken down, I felt deflated. Thom told me to run up and ask if I could go in for a sec, and despite my rule-following tendencies, I hopped out of the car and dashed to the door.

I was greeted enthusiastically by a volunteer named Dorrie who told me I could run upstairs and take a quick look around. I recognized her face from many prior visits to the shop when we've chatted about our shared love for vintage jewelry. Dorrie noticed my thimble necklace and asked if had made it. I told her I did and so she asked me to come to a back room to show me a broken necklace.

She pulled out a beautiful 1950's necklace with sprays of pink flowers, white leaves, and delicate dotted glass beads. A pair of matching clip on earrings were in the bag as well. Dorrie explained that it was one of her favorite necklaces but she could no longer wear it because it had fallen apart. She also had a newer beaded bracelet that had an over-stretched elastic. She asked if I could fix both pieces. I told her I would take them home to see what I can do. On the way out, she passed to me a bag of jewelry components that could use a second or even third chance at finding a good home and being used. I left the church with a few trinkets from the thrift store, a bag of free goodies and a new project. You gotta love thrift stores (and the cool people that work there)!

Once home, I completely took the necklace apart. All the corroded metal connecters were snipped off and discarded.

To create a new focal point for Dorrie's necklace, I started with a swirly brass stamping and an enamel flower from my own collection.

The glass flowers and leaves from Dorrie's original necklace could no longer be used as beads since their wires were snapped off, so I glued them around the enamel flower to create a pretty new pendant.

I rewired all the round glass beads into a new beadchain. Once I connected all the components, I decided to drape some of the bead chain under the new pendant to continue to circular line of the necklace.

Recently we returned to the Upper Room when my sister Shana was visiting from LA. I brought the almost-completed necklace and repaired bracelet with me for a final fitting. Dorrie and a group of volunteers were busy turning over the shop when we arrived. Shana and Thom browsed the wide selection of housewares, clothes, and other odd 'n' ends as I adjusted her pieces and added clasps.

After just a little tweaking, the necklace and bracelet fit Dorrie like a glove. Dorrie was happy with her upcycled pieces and wore them the rest of the day at the shop. The necklace looked absolutely lovely on her!

Before we left, Shana found a coat with bright Navajo designs and pair of leather shoes. We poked around the shop a bit more, chatted with many of the friendly volunteers, and said goodbye to Dorrie.

I never thought a last minute trip to a thrift store would lead to a new project. Thanks to Dorrie's kindness and open door, a great opportunity came about. I really enjoyed turning Dorrie's "old favorite" into a new wearable piece. Next time you're looking for bargains or want to meet a great gal stop by and see Dorrie at the Upper Room.

Best of Both Worlds

It's back to school eve. Tomorrow, twenty-one new faces will be walking through the door of my second grade classroom. I can practically smell the fresh boxes of crayons and feel the excitement in the air! Today, I fondly look back at a summer like no other. For the first time, I put most of my energy into designing, creating, and selling my jewelry. I experienced the highs, lows, and in-betweens of being on the road and doing outdoor shows. I met many inspiring artists/designers/crafters and made new friends. I enjoyed documenting my adventures on the road and in the studio through this blog. I felt such a range of emotions from the vulnerability of sharing my creations to the elation of a sale to a happy customer. It was a full summer indeed!

Though my summer vacation is almost behind me, I am determined to keep the creative momentum going. Thankfully, being a school teacher allows me to experience all that I love in life. I can pursue my passion for teaching during the school year and create on the weekends and during vacations. I often find that teaching and creating compliment each other in the best ways and the two worlds can definitely cross over. My favorite example is my REcap bracelets, created out of discarded marker caps from my students. Being surrounded by energetic seven year olds provides endless inspiration and having a creative outlet outside of school keeps me energized.

I am a lucky duck because I really do experience the best of both worlds. With a full school year ahead, holiday craft shows just around the corner, and new creative priorities, I know this upcoming year will be about striking a balance for me. I'm definitely up for the challenge and can't wait to see what the the future holds!

A Three-In-One Necklace Plus Seven New Lockets

Small vintage tins and compacts have inspired me to make locket necklaces with little surprises hidden inside. I tell folks that they are "two in one" necklaces because you can wear them with the lid on or off for two distinct looks. Thanks to a great suggestion from my husband Thom, I've made my first "three in one" necklace. "Paw on the Faucet" features a vintage faucet handle, a tiny tin, rhinestones, buttons, and a brass kitty.

Love, Love, Love: Surprises in the Mail

Last spring, I was set up next to Karen and Steve of Little Birch Farm at Twist in Northampton, MA. They offer a great line of skin care products with unique birch bark packaging, and on top of that they were super friendly neighbors who were a joy to hang out with. When Karen noticed that I used thimbles in my thimbilism necklaces she mentioned that she had a box of sewing notions at home that she could pass on to me. Recently, when a mysterious package arrived in the mail, I ripped it open and jumped for joy. Here's what I saw when I opened the box:

A sweet note on birch bark paper and a smiling straw kitty face greeted me. As I dug deeper into the box, more treasures revealed themselves: wooden spools of old thread, cloth tape measures, bobbins, a strand of decorative pearls, fasteners, needles, a beaded necklace, tiny plastic clothes pins, silver sequins, vintage buttons & buckles, and of course the coveted thimble! 

I've got the notion(s)!

One of the biggest questions I get as a person who upcycles is, "Where do you get all your materials?" The best way to answer that is "everywhere" and that's what makes the process so much fun. Whether I discover things on treasure hunts or pull items out of the recycling bin I can find ideas practically anywhere. Though I have to say, the most inspiring thing to me is the kindness and generosity of others. I can't wait to dig into my new materials!

On the Road - SoWa Open Market

Sunday was a big day for me. It marked my last official craft show of the summer season. With a new classroom full of second graders coming just weeks away, I knew this was going to be my last hoorah before getting back into number two pencil mode. It was also a big day at the SoWa Open Market and Farmer's Market. They were throwing their 8th annual B.Good Family BBQ to benefit Art Street. Twenty bucks got you piles of outdoor food and drink. After a few light sprinkles in the wee hours of the morning, the rest of the day stayed dry and cool for people strolling about at the market. One of my early visitors set a fun tone for the day by showing me there is more than one use for a REcap bracelet.

I got the warmest welcome ever from Pam Laurenzo of Black Sheep Designs. I met her about a year ago when I did my very first craft show in Newport. She reached out and was very encouraging to this nervous newbie. In addition to being in education like me, she also loves to reuse and repurpose vintage items in her jewelry. I adore her whimsical Junque Drawer necklaces with vintage toy license plates. She offers a great variety of one of a kind and limited edition earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. Her patinaed findings and brassy pendants are nicely paired with vintage beads and stones for a classy antiqued look with a fun twist. Pam's clever jewelry displays made from old books, bottles, wash boards, and other treasures make you feel like you're browsing around a curiosity shop. What a clever display!

After hearing my friend Grace rave about Nathan Murrell's Highjacked Ceramics and unique decor, it was terrific to finally meet him and see his display. Nathan has a background in ceramics, sculpture, and bookbinding so it's no wonder his mixed media pieces and pottery blend a mishmshosh of materials and techniques. I was instantly drawn to his Post Office Box Reliquaries with combination doors that actually lock and have hidden space inside. Being a fan of found objects, I appreciated his use of metal decorative flowers, old glass bottles, and hand molds in his designs. When I picked up one of his Tea Tumblers, I was amazed at the patterned details and unique glazing. It turns out he rolls his clay over old wood block patterns and layers on glaze to achieve his antiqued look. Anyone who appreciates handmade creations with a nod to the past and a touch of the enigmatic should visit him at SoWa. Visit his online store and his blog to learn more about his work.

Every time I've done SoWa Open Market, I've been set up near the lovely Adrienne Midash of Magdalina Designs and her dazzling hair accessories. It was a treat to be across from her smiling face again! Feathers, sequins, and delicate beading embellish her handmade headbands, stretch bands, pins, and clips. As an experienced costume designer and a former dancer, she has a flare for the high design with high quality materials (with a very affordable price). Adrienne can also custom design the piece of your dreams for weddings, formal events, or any special occasion. She is currently donating a portion of her proceeds from her pink pieces to Susan G. Komen For the Cure. Come September her team will be doing the 3 Day for the Cure in San Francisco; a 60 mile walk to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research.   I hadn't seen Carrie Wagner of Sepia Lepus since Brooklyn Craft Central's Shop the Archway show in May and it was a pleasure to see her again! Last time, we traded a pin for a necklace and I get tons of compliments every time I wear the adorably illustrated bear and squirrel pin of hers. As always, she offered a wide array of original illustrations, prints, cards, jewelry, magnets, and other pieces with her whimsical animals. Bunnies, bears, squirrels, and sea creatures fancifully romp across her work in imaginative scenes that evoke childhood storybook memories. Her creativity and skill won her the best costume award last year at SoWa's Market of the Living Dead last year. I can't wait to see the costume she comes up with for this year! Since SoWa is known far and wide, you get a chance to chat with folks from all over. I was visited by a family from Toronto who were on vacation. One of the daughters tried most of the tin locket necklaces before deciding upon "Hazel's Garden"; a piece created out of a vintage witch hazel salve tin, a textured celluloid button, and flowers from an old forget-me-not bouquet. She liked the fact that the necklace was "two in one" because you can wear it with the lid on or off. She looked fabulous in the piece. Other necklaces went to happy homes including an "I'm a Little Deer" pendant created out of a child's tin pin, a brassy filigree embellishment, and old button. Kelsey, a dancer in the Boston Ballet and customer from The Greenway on Saturday, returned wearing a piece she got the day before called "My Dog Has Fleas." I'm so glad she swung by to say hi and I loved seeing the piece on her.

After SoWa, my friend Grace and I actually found time to do a little thrifting. I dug deep in the crates to find my husband Thom some vinyl to add to his already towering collection and Grace also scored some nice bargains. That night we settled in with leftovers from Pomodoro and enjoyed His Girl Friday on the tube. The next day, before heading back to Connecticut we had breakfast at Zaftigs, a fabulous Jewish deli in Brookline. As an ode to my half Jewish, half Chinese side, I had the Pacific Islander omelet with scallions, soy sauce, and mushrooms. It was very reminiscent of the breakfast eggs mom used to make.

Deja vu. That's exactly what I felt as Grace and I loaded up her car for another double-show weekend in Boston. The week prior, we participated in The Greenway Open Market and SoWa and we were headed back to Boston to do it all again. A kind friend let us stay at his apartment in nearby Brookline. Upon our arrival, we settled into the comfy abode and then headed out to Pomodoro for a delicious meal. We enjoyed every bite of our linguini bolognese & seared scallops with chorizo, veggies, and risotto. After a full belly and a full night's rest, we got up bright and early for The Greenway Open Market.

Over-sized blue foamy blocks, bright plastic fish, and many other games were set up in the middle of The Rose Kennedy Greenway to attract kids of all ages. You could hear familiar squeals of excitement racing through the sprays of the Rings Fountain. The beautiful summer day and light wind welcomed in pedestrians from all parts of the city. Grace Napoleon of Folk Couture and I were set up next to each other. Grace moved her usual shop set up around for a new look and I excitedly displayed my new blinking eyeball necklaces front and center on my table.

Folk Couture

When I saw Shara Porter setting up next to me, I instantly recognized her eye-catching silk screened leather goods from the BUST Craftacular. I have always admired her work and was thrilled to be neighbors with her at the show. Small suitcases lined her table alongside perfectly displayed colorful wallets and change purses. Shara is known for silk screening on just about anything made from leather and originally started screen printing on vintage items. She now offers both vintage and new creations to suit everyone's needs and tastes. I loved her cleverly-chosen images, from woodland and oceanic creatures to everyday objects and nautical symbols. With a broad pallet of leather colors and a wide variety of clever images, it's easy to find the perfect handmade gift at her table. Driven by fine fabrics and classic design, Natalie Therese's handbags were a standout at The Greenway. She offered her hand sewn bags in a variety of styles and colors that could suit any occasion and function. I first noticed the smooth shape and styling of her Round Up bags. They would look great tucked under the arm of any gal walking about the city. Many of her bags were embellished with a stylish matching cloth flower and her clutch bags with bold patterns were definite crowd-pleasers. My favorite pattern was the "red pepper" with its striking red lines. For everyday or that special event, grab one of Natalie's bags for that perfect finishing touch.

Grace's hands have been on high speed this past week with over ten new pieces for her Folk Couture line. My favorite was her suspender print dress cleverly cut and sewn so it looked like the suspenders were in use. Many ladies happily emerged from her dressing room looking like a million bucks. Grace custom tailored several pieces for customers on the spot to make for a perfect fit. What a pro! Judging from the smiles below, you could say it was a very Grace day at the Greenway.

The Greenway is the perfect place to meet people from all over. Folks stopped by from all parts of the States, Europe, Australia, and Asia. RECap bracelets, Thimbilism Necklaces, and a variety of my other goodies will be spanning the globe with happy customers. My favorite Swedish headbadge necklace called "Near Perfekt" went off with a lovely lady from New York City.

Originally from California and transplanted to Boston via the Boston Ballet, dancer Kelsey  Ivana Hellebuyck started her day searching for one of her favorite jewelry designers in  the neighborhood. She just happened to come across the Greenway Open  Market during her travels and I'm so glad she did. It's no surprise she  looked smashing in everything she tried on, considering the Boston Globe  named her one of the 25 Most Stylish Bostonians of 2010. She left with several statement pieces, including "Ideal Split Shot";  an assemblage necklace using a vintage fishing sinker tin and a mix of  vintage chains. The next time I'm in Boston, I hope to catch one of her  performances with the Boston Ballet and you should too!

The afternoon was topped off with a melt-in-your-mouth pulled pork sandwich with carrot slaw, soft onions, and bbq sauce from The BBQ Smith food truck and I savored every bite. At the end of the day, Grace and I reloaded the car and we noticed there was more space in the trunk thanks to the busy day (always a great sign). To celebrate our day at The Greenway, we met her daughter Siena at Cognac Bistro in Brookline for a French dinner. Steak, seafood, and wine rounded out our night nicely but we had to top it off with ice cream from J.P. Licks to end things on the perfect note.

With my summer teaching gig over, and lots of vacation still ahead of me, I was excited to get back into the swing of shows again. This was my second "double Boston weekend" of the summer and I was looking forward to returning to the Greenway Open Market and SoWa with my friend Grace Napoleon of Folk Couture. We packed her vehicle tighter than a clown car with two displays worth of gear and drove off to stay with her daughter Siena in Cambridge. We had a smooth drive up and a relaxing night before the Greenway.

The humid New England day didn't keep locals and tourists from walking about the Greenway. We were welcomed by a mist surrounding the Rings Fountain and hoards of children dodging in and out of the sprays of water. As always, it was fun chatting the day away with Grace and watching her sew new creations on the spot. It was a busy day for Grace and folks from all over discovered her handmade OOAK apparel. I love the wow-moments when ladies walked out of her dressing room looking like the outfit was made just for them. An adorable party dress with crinoline and lovely shades of blue and green went home with a happy customer from Wyoming. Many stylish gals left the Greenway with a treasure from Grace's tent.

Grace introduced me to her friend Betsy Baker of Stonehouse Studio. Her polymer clay work is like none I have ever seen before. Her pendants were the first thing to catch my eye. Smooth detailed patterns contour round organic shapes and cradle delicate textured inlays. I was very fond of her bracelets and Grace was too. She treated herself to a colorful polka dotted bangle from Betsy at the end of the day. You can tell that Betsy has a master hand and has been doing this for years because she achieves intricate patterns and textures on such small spaces. Definitely check her out in the Boston area or on her website if you want to find someone a beautifully crafted, unique gift.

While waiting for my Boston Common grilled cheese from the Grilled Cheese Nation truck, vibrant images of lemons, pizzas, and watermelons beckoned to me from a nearby booth. I stopped to take a closer look and to talk with Dan of Dan Johnson Designs about his trivets. I found out that all of the housewares he offers are created from his original artwork and photographs. His eye-catching images and bold colors make his pieces the ideal accessory to brighten up your home. In addition to the trivets he offered clocks, mugs, coasters, trays, and a variety of other useful wares. Visit his website to see his mouth-watering designs.

Lured in by the  perfectly peaked cupcakes and a brightly colored stand I visited the Cupcake Cart on the Greenway for an afternoon pick me up. I chatted with the lovely gal working the cart and found out the stand was created by the same family who owns the local Bullfinch's Restaurant in Sudbury, MA. The cupcakes are only available on the Greenway and the stand is in a great location near the family-friendly fountain. I picked out a  vanilla cupcake with vanilla frosting to share with Grace and it was just the treat to get us through the afternoon.

The biggest highlight of my day was meeting a customer who said she read my write up in the Weekly Dig. She left with several of my favorite pieces including "A Dazzling Display of Sportsmanship." I also met a very friendly mom and daughter visiting from New Jersey. The mom and I shared a love of vintage and we chatted about a great rummage sale in her area. She left with one of my newest tin locket creations called "Outdoor Girl." A sweet couple that was getting married the following week found the perfect gift for one of the girls in their wedding: a rainbow-colored REcap Bracelet. And guess where the bracelet was going to...Fairfield, CT where I teach and where the marker caps originally came from. You can't make these things up!

After heading back to Siena's and freshening up we all headed out to celebrate Siena's birthday at Evoo in Boston. It was great to hang out with her parents and boyfriend Ian, who had been kind enough to help us set up and break down at the shows all weekend. We all tucked into some delicious locally grown and organic food. From appetizers to our main entrees, we enjoyed every bite and were most impressed by the presentation of the food and eclectic decor of the restaurant. The night was topped off with a lavender infused pana cotta accompanied by a candle and song for the birthday girl.

The next day we were up early to set up at SoWa Open Market. The grey skies warned of a wet day ahead and that it was! Despite the showers, folks still showed up with raincoats and umbrellas to see what the market had to offer. I have to admit that I was a little too rain-shy to visit with other vendors and write about their goods, but you'll have to believe me when I tell you that there was a nice variety of both handmade goods and food there (as there always is!). Grace sported a new polka dotted cuff that she got from Betsy Baker at the Greenway. Grace busily sewed two new dresses by the end of the day and sent some pretty hand made outfits home with happy customers.

A gal swung by with an amazing Basquiat t-shirt. We ended up talking a little about the London exhibit where she got the shirt. She went home with a magnet necklace called "Laws of Attraction." I jokingly told her I would trade the necklace for her cool t-shirt... and I would have if she was up for it! Oh well... Towards the end of the day a guy came by who was really drawn to the Thimblism Necklaces. He carefully read each thimble on the display and found a plastic one that advertised a shop in Seattle, Washington. The street address was just blocks away from where he used to live. He instantly knew that was the necklace for him.

After SoWa, we headed toward Siena's and once the weather cleared up, we all walked to Jose's Mexican Restaurant. To celebrate the weekend, we enjoyed drinks and some delicious authentic Mexican fare. Sangria, salsa and chips, a margarita, and generous portions made us feel stuffed and satisfied. We definitely walked home a happy group!

On Monday, Grace and I packed up, said our goodbyes and headed to a very special pastry spot: Sofra. Their delectable display of sweets and Middle Eastern specialties made it difficult to pick just one item, so Grace and I noshed on a nice variety of treats while unwinding with a tea and latte. Once fed, we hit the road. The car, being a bit lighter after selling at our shows, had some precious extra room. We made several stops at some of our favorite crafty and thrifty places on the way back to Connecticut. These detours proved to be quite rewarding so we were thankful for the extra trunk space. Thanks to some metal poles between us in the car I had a "censored" view of Grace on the ride home. This provided us with many laughs and a few close calls during sharp turns.

This Boston weekend had a little of everything to make for the perfect adventure: family, friends, food, and finds. I can't wait to do all again this coming weekend!

Love, Love, Love: Pocket Sized Protractors

My first experience with a protractor was less than mathematical. Clear, plastic ones were handed out during math class the day angles were introduced. I did what most kids do when handed the foreign instrument for the first time. I stuck the tip of my pencil in the tiny hole along the bottom and flicked it around until it went flying across the classroom. Being a teacher now, I can only imagine that my poor math teacher did the "not again" eye roll.

I really hadn't thought much about protractors until last year. I was at the Elephants Trunk Flea Market with Thom. We passed by a table that was covered in rusty tools and I noticed something bright sticking out of the pile. I paused and wriggled out a  white, metal, pocket-sized protractor with blue numbers on it. The tool was way too bent out of shape and rusted to use but the instrument intrigued me. The shape and size seemed like they would lend themselves well to making a necklace. I filed the idea away and decided to actively seek out small protractors during my treasure hunts.

Before long, I found the identical protractor in much better condition. It paired up perfectly with a vintage diving girl pin reminiscent of Esther Williams. Once I added a chain and a few charms "Estheronomy" was born.

Then I discovered pocket sized brass protractors. I created "Steeplechase" using a brass horse, some rhinestones, and a tassel.

Last month I made pieces on the more whimsical and colorful side, using animals and flowers.

Upcycling allows me to make my own rules and use items in non-traditional ways. Protractors are a great example of how you don't have to go "by the numbers" when creating jewelry.

Sunday was day two of my Boston adventures. After a full day at the Greenway Open Market, I couldn't wait to see what SoWa Open Market  had to offer. I've been told by hoards of crafters and visitors alike  that the market is incredible. I was so excited to finally be a part of  it!

Thom  and I got a lovely corner spot at the market, complete with a waving  blue banner. The first thing that caught our eyes were the food trucks  located close to us. Thom got a decadently delicious egg and pulled pork  sandwich from Silk Road BBQ while I noshed on a light popover from the Clover food truck.  Throughout the day, we found the best possible way to keep cool: multiple frozen lemonades from Del's. I'm craving one right now.

Soon after setting up, we were given a friendly welcome from Margaret DeBruin,  who makes one-of-a-kind clothing for babies and toddlers. When I  visited her booth full of adorable, upcycled clothing and accessories, I  wanted to touch ever piece because her recycled fabrics and color  combinations were so eye-catching and happy. I was not surprised at all  when I found out she was friends with Grace Napoleon  since both gals make the most amazing clothes-out-of-clothes. Margaret  offers a wide range of pieces such as sun hats, dresses, hoodies,  mittens and other accessories. Her pieces show that going green can be  loads of fun and can start at a very early age.  A table full of striking leather cuffs drew me to Aaron's Chocolate Treats.  The hand crafted lace up bracelets sported bold, yet simple geometric  shapes and had a softer than butter feel to them. Once I looked around  the booth, there was even more to discover. Aaron offered whimsical  prints and paintings inspired by the Harlem Renaissance. His portraits  really captured the high style and feel of the 30's. My favorite  painting of his was a beautiful portrait of his mother. What beauty and  grace! Just steps away from the SoWa Open Market was the SoWa Vintage Market.  As soon as I walked through the entrance, my jaw hit the floor. I was  in vintage wonderland! Glittering piles of costume jewelry, racks upon  racks of colorful vintage clothing, and long stretches of housewares and  art welcomed me in. Created and managed by Stephanie Pernice and John  Warren, this amazing inside venue has everything and anything a  collector and vintage lover could ask for. Every inch of the brick  warehouse is covered in amazingly displayed curiosities from both  regular and rotating vendors. I was quite impressed by the selection and  great deals to be had. I ended up getting an enameled white and green  chain necklace from the 60's from Stephanie's booth. LOVE! Once I  returned to my booth outside, and tagged Thom out, he spent a good  amount of time combing through records and coming home with some gems,  including an experimental Japanese electronics album. With two  incredible markets right next to each other, you can't go wrong!

My  favorite hostess with the mostest Stacey swung by to say hello. We'd  been taking refuge at her place since Friday and couldn't have done the two show weekend without her support. Before she left, she was bejeweled  with a new rhinestone and tin car necklace called "Joy Ride." She looked  dazzling if you ask me! We were also visited by some folks who met us  at the Greenway Open Market the day before. They returned to get a few pieces including a space age statement necklace called, "Barbarella" and a thimblism necklace  with an orange pear. It was my third thimblism necklace sold to a guy  during the weekend. I was thrilled to find out that men like thimbles  too!

My  busy Boston weekend ended on such a positive note. As Thom and I drove  home we couldn't stop talking about all the great places we visited and  folks we met. I'm counting down the days 'til the next double weekend!

Last Saturday was opening day for the Greenway Open Market at the Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston. Organized by the same folks who run SoWa Open Market, this open air market offered a nicely juried selection of art and craft vendors. Located near the trolley tour pick up spot and the Boston Aquarium, the area was hustling and bustling with both locals and tourists. The Rings Fountain sprayed swarms of children with choreographed patterns of water in the center of the Greenway and a carousel spun at the north end, keeping families cool and entertained all day.

Thom and I were packed for a two-show weekend. The following day we were doing SoWa. We were lucky enough to stay with our friend Stacey who lives in Hull. The night before the Greenway, we enjoyed lobster rolls, ice cream, a carousel, and a vintage ball-rolling game call "Fascination" by the shore. Feeling fully entertained and well-fed, we were charged and ready for the great weekend ahead.

One of our neighbors was Wendy of Lathergy Soaps. It's always great being next to handmade soaps, especially on a breezy day. Fresh herbal and floral scents filled the air and set a such relaxing tone. I had a chance to sniff all the special blends and I really enjoyed the Blend Number One with lavender, tea tree oil, and rosemary. I thought their picnic basket displays were especially charming. Melissa of Coral Belles had the perfect combination of bright colors and patterns in her fanciful, handmade children's clothes. Melissa's seaside inspired dresses, ruffle shorts, and accessories were a big hit with people looking for gifts for fashionable girls and their moms. Her blue and green whale dress was such a fresh and fancy free design. It reminded me of summer jaunts to Newport. She was such a friendly neighbor and I really enjoyed chatting the day away with her. Check out Melissa's Etsy shop for a great sampling of her work!

You couldn't help but smile when you saw the capes and super hero gear from Little Hero Capes. Allison has created a whole fantasy world of capes, masks, and cuffs to dress any pint sized villain fighter. Stars, lightning bolts, hearts, rockets, and even skulls emblazoned the sleek fabric capes. I had the pleasure of seeing one of her capes in action on a little guy soaring near the fountains at the Greenway and it absolutely made my day. Whenever I bump into John of John Warren Designs, I'm always eager to see the new clever designs he has to offer. Being a frequent picker and hunter at old factories, markets, and other places of intrigue you just never know what new furniture design he has up his sleeve. John combines old pieces of wood, fascinating metal detail, interesting paint finishes and unexpected decorative touches (like children's building blocks and textured tin ceiling tiles) to create re-envisioned vintage masterpieces. I was drawn to his end tables with carved horse heads. Visit his blog for a peek into his world and to find out where you can spot him next.

Thom and I enjoyed some crunchy and gooey grilled cheese sandwiches from the Grilled Cheese Nation truck. Their sour dough bread and creative ingredient combinations made their truck a popular stop at the market. Throughout the day I longingly watched the kids splashing around in the fountains and wished I could dash through the water myself. The park provided many games and toys on the Greenway for kids of all ages to use. It really is the perfect family destination.

I love meeting new people at markets. My first customer was a local Bostonian out for a jog. We had a great conversation about collecting small vintage items. She ended up jogging back home with a rainbow REcap bracelet and one of my favorite new pieces called "Drama Queen." I was visited by a wonderful pediatrician from Toronto. He thought a barber pole and hot dog thimbilism necklace would be a big hit with his small patients. I ended up making him necklaces with longer chains so he could wear them with his hospital badge. An assemblage necklace called "Camping Neath the Stars" made from a vintage Swedish bicycle head badge went home with a found object artist. We also talked in depth about collecting and the joys of treasure hunting for inspiration. There was never a dull moment at the Greenway thanks to all the fascinating people around.

Love, Love, Love: Small Tin Boxes

In middle school, I thought I was pretty hot stuff walking around with my tiny tin container filled with watermelon flavored lip balm. Long after the balm was gone, I would keep the box. The small size, cute graphics, and slide cover were just too appealing to throw away. The same held true for candy tins, hinged Band-Aid boxes, and cookie tins. I just couldn't let them go. As I got older, I acquired a nice variety of old tin containers from my grandmother and found even more while on treasure hunts. Without even trying, I had built a collection over time.

It's easy to justify accumulating tin containers. They're colorful, durable, and useful (even if you never actually refill them). They reveal a slice of the past and are living proof of how packaging has changed over time. I think that's why I couldn't resist buying an "IDEAL SPLIT SHOT" tin at the Elephants Trunk last year. Its compact size, happy colors, and hidden "Take a Boy Fishing" message on the back made it an irresistible purchase. I didn't even know what split shot was, but I took it home anyway. After bails were added to the back of the box, a complimenting buckle was found, and chains were coordinated, the piece evolved into one of my favorite multi-strand necklaces.

Since then I have been on the lookout for other small tins. Here is a piece called "A Fine Fineline." The tins once housed mechanical pencil erasers.

Most recently, I've discovered sample-sized tins. Being so small, they lend themselves well to making jewelry and don't take up much space in my already crowded apartment.

Their graphics pack a lot of punch for their size. Sometimes the back is as interesting as the front.

One of the interesting challenges of working with tins is finding the ancient contents inside (with accompanying mysterious odors).

Once all ointments, salves, and undefinable residues are removed, you can use the boxes like a locket to house pictures, collages, mini-dioramas and all sorts of treasures.

Good things really do come in small packages but it's the small packages themselves that I like the most!
